Answer engine optimisation (AEO) describes work to make a business’s information useful and discoverable in experiences that answer questions directly. For a UK business, that means explaining the service, supporting claims and checking how answers represent you. It also means making it easy for a prospective customer to take the next step.
AEO is an industry label, not a separate rulebook issued by search engines. Providers use it for different combinations of direct answers and AI search. Before commissioning work, agree which questions, products and pages are in scope. A useful proposal names the work and evidence behind the acronym.
How does AEO relate to AI SEO and GEO?
AI SEO can mean improving visibility in AI search, or using AI tools to perform SEO work. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) usually emphasises generated answers. AEO places the emphasis on answering the question. These descriptions overlap; they do not prove that three separate services are needed.
For Google’s AI features, Google treats this work as SEO. The shared foundations still matter. Our GEO, AEO and SEO comparison helps you compare proposals by their actual scope.
Which questions deserve attention first?
Start with questions customers ask before buying, especially where an incomplete answer creates uncertainty. Review recent enquiries, sales conversations and relevant search queries. Group similar questions around one service page instead of creating a page for every wording.
| Buyer question | What the page should explain |
|---|---|
| What does your bookkeeping service include? | The tasks, exclusions, responsibilities and basis of the fee. |
| Can you support our team remotely? | The actual delivery process, contact arrangements and limitations. |
| How do we compare suitable providers? | Relevant experience, checkable credentials, contract scope and a useful next step. |
These are illustrative questions, not measured search-volume claims. Select questions that fit your offer and customers. A widely searched topic can still be a poor priority if its readers are unlikely to need your service.
What does a useful answer look like?
Imagine a business support firm whose page says only “tailored solutions for growing companies”. A buyer cannot tell whether onboarding is included, who carries out the work or what happens after signing. The first improvement is to answer those questions with the firm’s actual process.
Put the direct explanation near the relevant heading, then give enough detail to support a decision. State who the service suits, what is included, any important exclusions and how pricing is established. Add a worked example only where its assumptions are clear. Label fictional examples and keep client information private.
A table can help compare genuine options; a paragraph can explain a judgement. Choose the format for the reader. Neither a fixed paragraph length nor a repeated FAQ formula guarantees an AI citation.
Check access before rewriting everything
A useful page needs to be reachable through the website and readable on a phone. Ask your developer or search specialist to check indexing and any controls that may restrict access or display. Use native inspection tools to investigate search-engine access rather than assuming that an ordinary browser visit proves it.
Google requires pages to be indexed and snippet-eligible for its generative Search features. Also check the Search generative AI inclusion setting in Search Console. Eligibility is not a promise of selection. Google’s AI features guidance does not require special AI files or schema.
Build answers from evidence you can maintain
Name the person or team responsible for the service and explain relevant experience accurately. Link to genuine credentials where useful. Check that service names, contact details and fees agree across your own pages and current public profiles.
In regulated sectors, have the appropriate person review material claims before publication. Keep a review owner for details that change. An attractive answer becomes unhelpful when the fee, qualification or service it describes is no longer current.
How should you measure AEO?
Save a starting record before making changes. Use agreed questions in named products and record the date, conditions, full answer and visible sources. Score a business mention, a link to your website and a factual error separately. If a response cannot be obtained, mark it unavailable.
Use native reports alongside these observations. Google’s Generative AI performance report covers impressions in supported Search features. Bing AI Performance reports citation activity across its supported experiences; its citation count is not a ranking or a website visit.
Repeat the agreed checks and record changes to the test. Then assess identifiable visits, received enquiries, qualification and won business separately. One favourable answer is an observation. It does not establish a trend or prove that your website edit caused the result.
What should an AEO provider deliver?
Ask for a sample showing the original evidence, the diagnosis and the proposed action. The scope should identify the questions and pages being reviewed, who implements changes, how accuracy is checked and what you receive at handover. Compare those details before comparing monthly fees.
Answari’s AI SEO, GEO and AEO services start with a scoped audit. The sample audit shows the report format. Implementation and ongoing measurement are separate choices; an existing agency or developer can use the resulting plan.
Practical AEO questions
Do I need a separate AEO website?
Usually, begin with the website your customers already use. Improve the pages that answer their questions, and add a new page only when it serves a distinct need.
Will adding FAQs guarantee AI recommendations?
No. FAQs can help readers find useful answers, but their presence does not guarantee that an AI product will cite your page or recommend your business.
Can I start without a monthly retainer?
Yes. Answari offers a standalone audit. You receive the findings and prioritised plan, with any implementation or ongoing monitoring agreed separately.
To start with one buyer question, request a free visibility check. For a wider investigation, compare the audit scope and pricing with the decisions your business needs to make.
